My Biggest Small Business Mistake #5

by on April 29, 2009

Lack of a MasterMind Group

This one is huge, colossal. Before we get into my mistake and how you can avoid doing the same thing as a top entrepreneur (or not doing “the thing”) let’s define what a mastermind group is.

Napoleon Hill, advisor to some of the best entrepreneurs of our time, may have coined the term originally. At the very least he was most likely the first to write about its effectiveness extensively in his amazingly popular book titled, “Think and Grow Rich”.

Napoleon defines a mastermind group as:

“Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.”

He adds:

“”No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind [the master mind].”

As we built our real estate business there were always “mentors” to consult with but we never took the time to construct a mastermind group with the intent of achieving higher levels of success.

Even though we were navigating new territory with online lead generation, it would have not been difficult to find trusted advisers to meet with consistently who, “in a spirit of harmony”, could have helped us avoid many, if not all of the mistakes I’ve been writing about.

Here are some of the benefits of a mastermind group:

*You have a group of trusted advisors available to help you succeed and avoid mistakes.

*You get the benefit of differing perspectives, opinions, and experiences.

*You get instant feedback and suggestions

*Your mastermind members can bring resources and connections to the table you might not have had on your own.

*The group provides accountability and inspiration which allows you to maintain focus in achieving your goals.

*Your mastermind team will offer help based on their “outside view” of your business, whereas you “can’t see the forest for the trees”.

Leaders such as Dale Carnegie, Henry J. Ford, and Ghandi have all successfully used the mastermind principle to achieve a definite purpose.

[NOTE:  Napoleon Hill’s materials have provided entrepreneur training to more business owners anyone in our generation.  For more information on how you can create your own mastermind group visit http://www.naphill.org and http://www.MagicMastermind.com (free resources, no affiliate links).

Master mind your way to the top!
