My Biggest Small Business Mistake #4

Lack of Retention Strategies for Team Members

Our business model was pretty simple. Recruit newly licensed agents, set them up with lead generation marketing systems, train them on prospecting and sales techniques, and watch the checks roll in.

Along the way we continued to teach agents what I call “work-job” related skills like the ones I mentioned above plus working short sales, effective listing presentations, land development, basically anything real estate related.

This was training the agents needed to advance in the real estate industry but it wasn’t enough to become a top entrepreneur.

What they needed… and wanted (even if they didn’t realize it) was more personalized training… self development training.

As our top agents rose to certain production levels and had amassed a lot of education and experience, they no longer felt compelled to stay on board.

Why would they?

We provided Real Estate agent training, not entrepreneur training.

They knew how to generate their own leads, build relationships and close deals. Why pay us a 10-30% split on each deal if they had all the tools and know how to do it on their own?

Here’s where we screwed up.

Ultimately our goal was to recruit and train more top producers in our market than anyone.

Unfortunately we missed out on a great opportunity to grow and help our agents grow due to our lack of self development training.

Had we enhanced our entrepreneur training to include education in areas such as motivation, goal setting, leadership, self confidence, time management, personal finance, just to name a few, our team would have continued to flourish and grow.

Agents would have felt more compelled to be a part of our team long term through a growing sense of loyalty.

Personal development training helps people at their core. It arms them with tools to grow their business exponentially… not just gradually.

It improves relationships, management of personal finances, self-worth, putting you in “success mode”.

When “self” is developed, everything else becomes easier in your life. Your “work-job” education is implemented more efficiently to maximize returns.

Stronger relationships and leadership attitudes attract new people and opportunities to you.

If your business requires employees, partners, down line, whatever, create an on-going entrepreneur education system centered around self development.

Help your associates be their very best.   Provide them with the very best tools and training available.  They will love you for it and you will love your bottom line!

What you help others create for themselves will come back to you ten- fold.
